NC-ANE Submits Public Comment to U.S. Department of Education on Graduate Nursing Student Loan Policy

The National Consortium of Academic Nurse Educators Inc (NC-ANE) has submitted a public comment to the U.S. Department of Education regarding proposed changes to federal student loan policies affecting graduate nursing education.

The statement urges the Department to recognize graduate nursing programs - MSN, DNP, and PhD - as professional degree pathways eligible for federal loan programs. Limiting loan access could si.gnificantly impact the pipeline of academic nurse educators, advanced practice nurses, and nurse researchers, ultimately affecting the nation’s ability to educate the future nursing workforce.

NC-ANE remains committed to advocating for policies that strengthen nursing education and support the preparation of the next generation of nurse educators.

NC-ANE Statement About Death of Alex Pretti

1/27/2026

The National Consortium for Academic Nurse Educators (NC-ANE) joins our colleagues across the globe in grieving the recent tragic death of registered nurse, Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis, MN on 1/24/2026. As nurse educators, we teach our students to engage in health, advocacy and public policy as well as to be aware of and address the social determinants of health and health equity, all of which are necessary and appropriate when considering what occurred. Mr. Pretti demonstrated caring and compassion in his clinical practice in the ICU of the Veterans Administration, as well as in protecting his fellow protesters and those impacted by immigration enforcement actions.

We also join our colleagues in calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into his death. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

NC-ANE stands with the ANA and with nurses across the country in calling for accountability, safety, and respect for human dignity.

Stephanie is a nurse educator with over nine years of experience. She brings a wealth of nursing program experience to NC-ANE as she has taught in licensed practical nursing, associate degree nursing, LPN to RN bridge, and RIBN (Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses) programs. Stephanie believes she can bring a very diverse outlook to the organization, as she is still active in nursing practice and in nursing education. She sees firsthand the daily struggles that nurse educators face to prepare students for the workforce. Stephanie knows the sacrifice it takes to move from bedside nursing to nursing education and she wants to promote the importance of supporting and growing nursing education for the future.

Director-at-Large
Suzanne Soltysik, DNP, RN-BC, NPD-BC, CNE

Zelda is one of the founding members of NC-ANE serving in both the Professional Organizations subcommittee and the Bylaws committee. Although retired, she feels passionate about educating the next generation of faculty through mentoring, an essential function she truly believes is significant to improve faculty retention. Zelda also remains active in her professional activities such as the book chapter she authored in Visual Nursing (4th ed), due out in October, Next Gen question writing the Walter Kluwer and being a member of the South Carolina Nursing Education Simulation Alliance. She has previous board experience at Hadassah's Nurses Council of NJ and on the NC-ANE Board of Directors. She desires to serve to promote academic nurse educators ‘expertise as independent of nursing but concurrent. Zelda believes academic nurse educators should be recognized for their specialty as advanced practice. To achieve this, not only the healthcare community needs to view ANEs as advanced practice but the communities at large. Collaboration with outside stakeholders, research and advocacy are essential to achieve the mission and vision of NC-ANE.

Empowering Nurse Educators: NC-ANE’s Inaugural Virtual Launch Unveils a New Era of Collaboration and Research

On May 18, 2024, the founding members and officers of the National Consortium of Academic Nurse Educators, Inc. (NC-ANE) announced the official launch of the organization. The event took place via Zoom from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST, with the presence of 58 active members.

NC-ANE President, Dr. Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo, called the official launching ceremony in action by providing a brief history of NC-ANE and how nurse educators across the US came together via an online platform to discuss the current struggles faced by them, which led to the official start of NC-ANE in 2023. Dr. Zelda Suzan, director-at-large, was the moderator of this virtual launch and efficiently coordinated the entire event.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Amy Hall, Dean of SON-Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, AL, delivered a highly engaging and remarkable keynote speech on self-care, joy, and happiness with examples from the realm of genetic research. The key takeaway from her speech was that, irrespective of their busy schedules, every nursing professional is expected to engage in a self-care practice of their choice to improve their own energy and health so that they can better focus on their assigned tasks in their practice settings.

Following this, Dr. Edwin-Nikko Kabigting, research co-chair of NC-ANE, highlighted the NC-ANE’s achievements on various research projects and how the members of the organization disseminated these works via publications and presentations, which was inspiring to the attendees. Dr. Susan Seibold-Simpson, co-president elect and the current lead of the organization’s ‘Delphi Research Study’ on the academic nursing shortage, shared the progress of the study and the current and future plans to disseminate the findings from this work. These presentations were followed by the induction ceremony, where all the current officers took the pledge and announced their dedication and commitment to serve the NC-ANE with their full potential to support the mission and vision of the organization. Dr. Amy Hall, who was the keynote speaker, recited the induction pledge for all the officers. The virtual launch concluded at 1 p.m. with closing remarks from Dr. Catherine Quay, co-president elect of NC-ANE.
